Record number of Australians able to vote …
THE EQUALITY CAMPAIGN WELCOMES RECORD NUMBER OF AUSTRALIANS ABLE TO VOTE
National marriage equality advocacy group, The Equality Campaign today welcomed the announcement by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) that there has been more than 930,000 address updates and enrolments since the Government announced it was pushing ahead with a postal plebiscite on marriage equality.
Figures released today showing 16 million people are now eligible to participate in the postal plebiscite reveal Australians understand they cannot be complacent about marriage equality.
“This has been one of the most successful enrolment campaigns in Australian history,” said Tiernan Brady, Executive Director, The Equality Campaign.
“This amazing result is a tribute to the thousands of people around the country that have made this happen. It’s also a reflection of the amount of energy that will be required if our LGBTI friends and family members are to win the same dignity and status as other Australians.
“We are not complacent about this at all. This maybe one of the most successful enrolment campaigns but if we are to achieve equality, supporters need to ensure they vote ‘Yes’ and post their ballots back.
“People know this campaign is about their friends and family and that’s why we’ve seen this record number of people enrolling to have their opinions heard.
“It’s important that the same energy that led to the record enrolments is carried throughout the remainder of the campaign.
“Our campaign is simply about a fair go for every Australian and we urge supporters across the nation to get behind and join The Equality Campaign as we work to make marriage equality a reality for every Australian,” Tiernan Brady concluded.
