Adventures and Learning on the Windeward Bound

Presented by Susie Graney, First Mate

The Brigantine Windeward Bound is now a permanent part of the Hobart waterfront and its crew is actively involved with sail training and leadership courses. It was built in Hobart and launched 21 years ago.

The Windeward Bound is crewed by volunteers, some spending six months on board as live-aboard crew. No experience is required prior to joining the Windeward Bound, as full training is provided.

Gaining qualifications in the maritime industry is difficult – to get a qualification you need sea time, but how do you get sea time when commercial vessels won’t hire you without a qualification? The Windeward Bound Trust has provided scholarships to over 40 young volunteers allowing them to gain maritime qualifications, which have seen them work in the industry; locally, interstate and internationally.

Susie Graney will speak about her time as First Mate on board the Windeward Bound, detailing the ship’s youth development, crew and scholarship programs.

Susie is a born and raised Tassie local with a long association with the sea and sailing. She was born in Hobart, the middle of three daughters and, if photographic evidence is to be believed, was at sea with the family soon after. She attended Blackmans Bay Primary School, then St Michael’s Collegiate School in Hobart graduating in 1997. In January 1998, she joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Seaman Officer and spent the next 18 years living and working in many states, and serving on a range of different vessels including STS Young Endeavour, Patrol Boats, Frigates and Replenishment ships with several operational deployments. In September 2016, Susie left the RAN to take up her new role as the Mate on board Windeward Bound, she brings with her a passion for youth development and teaching and a keen love of sailing and all things maritime.
