Another avoidable death

Posted on

Another man held by the Australian Government on Manus Island has been found dead. This is the the 7th person in four years to have died in the inhumane Australian offshore detention regime.

George Newhouse Principal Solicitor of the National Justice project said:
“Another vulnerable refugee has died under Australia’s extreme Immigration policy and by all reports this death could have been avoided if this poor young man got the care he needed”

“Who next? These men are brothers, dads and sons who have been treated so badly under our watch that they see death as an option or have in fact died as a result of government negligence”

“It has been a week of horrors for the men on Manus – multiple victims of violent robberies and men left with shocking injuries. In the face of such risk the government should not undertake evictions to force Refugees into a hostile Manus community”

The deaths must stop. The Prime Minister has a duty to keep these men safe.
