Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.

Several Manus Island refugees have been attacked by locals as the Papua New Guinean government continues to forcibly resettle detainees of the Manus detention centre.

An Iranian man and a Sudanese man were attacked with machetes at the weekend, while an Afghan refugee was attacked and mugged. Graphic images of the men’s injuries have circulated on social media, angering asylum seekers and refugees being relocated to an Australian-built transit centre in Lorengau as the Manus detention centre is shut down. Detainees have been threatened with arrest by PNG authorities if they do not leave the detention centre, which is being closed in October.
