The TSO will perform the Baroque concert FIREWORKS Friday July 7 at Federation Concert Hall, Hobart. Featuring acclaimed soprano Sara Macliver, TSO Principal Trumpet Yoram Levy and internationally renowned conductor Oliver Gooch, this concert guarantees fireworks in every respect with Handel’s celebratory Royal Fireworks Music – one of the glittering jewels of the Baroque – and sparkling arias from Giulio Cesare, Alcina and Samson, including “Let the bright Seraphim”.

The TSO is delighted to welcome back maestro Oliver Gooch, who last conducted the TSO at the Helpmann Award-winning concert with Julia Lezhneva in 2014.

For a full evening of entertainment, join us for at 7.30pm for an unmissable evening of stunning baroque repertoire after the Festival of Voices ‘Big Sing’, which will be 6pm at Salamanca Place.

Sara Macliver is one of Australia’s most popular and versatile sopranos, appearing in opera, concert and recital performances and on numerous recordings. She is regarded as one of the leading exponents of Baroque repertoire in Australia. She trained in Perth, where she was a pupil of the renowned soprano Molly McGurk and during that time she was a Young Artist with the West Australian Opera Company. She is a regular performer with Symphony Australia Orchestras in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Queensland and Tasmania, as well as Musica Viva, Melbourne Chorale, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Australia Bach Ensemble, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. Sara Macliver has a number of recordings to date for ABC Classics including Fauré’s Requiem and Birth of Venus. In 2002 she completed a recording of Handel’s Messiah for a joint ABC Classics and ABC Television production, released on CD and DVD, and screened twice on national television. Her recording of Bach arias and duets with the mezzosoprano Sally-Anne Russell has been nominated for an ARIA award.

Following appointment by Sir Antonio Pappano as the first Associate Young Artist at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 2004, Oliver Gooch’s conducting career has seen collaborations with major UK orchestras such as the London Symphony, Philharmonia, BBC Symphony, Hallé, and Northern Sinfonia. Further afield, he has made highly-acclaimed debuts with the New York Sinfonietta, Milan’s Orchestra i Pomeriggi Musicali, and the Orchestra della Toscana. Oliver Gooch balances orchestral work with opera engagements. He gave the American première of Janáček’s Šárka with New York’s Dicapo Opera, and made his Italian debut at Teatro Ponchielli, Cremona with The Magic Flute. Committed to nurturing new talent, he has spearheaded a number of Young Artist programs. In 2007 he was elected the youngest Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Principal Trumpet of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) since 1998, Yoram Levy was a member of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) from 1982 to 1990 where he worked regularly with conductors Zubin Mehta and Leonard Bernstein, participated in numerous recordings and toured Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia. He has appeared as principal trumpet with the New Zealand Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Queensland Symphony and Western Australian Symphony, and performed as soloist with the TSO, Australian Chamber Orchestra and Queensland Symphony. He is Brass Coordinator and Trumpet Lecturer at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music and president of the Island Brass Academy, an organisation dedicated to educating young Tasmanian brass players.
