Telluride, Banff, Sundance and now you can add Cradle Mountain to the list. The Cradle Mountain Film Fest will kick off this Friday, bringing the tradition of mountain towns hosting film festivals to the southern hemisphere.

The Cradle Mountain Film Fest will screen some of the world’s best adventure films, brought from Telluride Mountainfilm in Colorado, alongside Tasmanian adventure films.

Cradle Mountain itself will feature prominently in the festival. An outdoor screening on Saturday night will have the mountain as a backdrop as the sun sets. A selection of some of the world’s best short adventure films will feature on the outdoor screen and a free event on Sunday will see films screening in mountain huts around the Cradle Mountain day walk area, some of which are not usually open to the public.

The festival aims to develop the standard of film making in Tasmania and there will be a great opportunity for budding adventure film makers to learn what it takes to get their film in an international film festival. Marissa Mattys from Telluride Mountainfilm and two experienced local film producers will give a free workshop on what it takes to get your film on the international stage.

Other features of the festival include a Tasmanian short film competition with over $3000 in prizes; a screening of fun and educational films for children at Devils@Cradle (ticket price includes a guided tour of the devil sanctuary); early morning wilderness yoga; and a feature film Sea Gypsies at the Cradle Mountain Hotel on Friday night.

A smaller version of the event has been trialled two times previously. This year, having received funding through the Events Tasmania Regional Events Start Up Program, we have expanded it significantly.

The event is organised by adventure tourism business Cradle Mountain Canyons. Cradle Mountain Canyons employee Anna Paice volunteered at Telluride Mountainfilm in 2003 and had the idea to bring the event to Tasmania.
