MASKS

Tyler Faulstich and Julie Monro-Allison explore the cultural, historical, sociological, aesthetic and transformative qualities of masks.

Their exhibition “Masks” opens at Moonah Arts Centre at 6pm on Thursday 9 February.

The form of the mask has arisen independently across cultures at many points throughout history. Faulstich and Monro-Allison explore the ubiquitous nature of these face coverings, while also questioning what contemporary masks signify in our culture today.

In this exhibition, Faulstich creates masks for an invented culture, one that references mysticism, tribalism, animistic traditions and the sacred in the everyday. He says that he hopes to “evoke the long-past power that masks once held”.

Monro-Allison uses domestic materials in her works to explore how the wearer can be transported by a mask. She explains that she is interested in the “idea of masks as a method of escape, at least psychologically, from the realities of home into the world of the imagination”.

Working with an array of different materials, these two artists create masks that are beautiful, fun, and thought provoking.
