Theatre Royal: Antarctica
Antarctica, A New Musical presented by the Tasmanian Theatre Company and Sundog Productions was today launched at the Theatre Royal in Hobart.
This launch was a unique opportunity for the people of Hobart to experience a taste of what they can expect from this new musical. BOBBY FOX and IMOGEN MOORE took the stage to entertain…and a Penguin and Albatross also made an appearance!
Antarctica will make its world debut at Hobart’s Theatre Royal this October. Tasmanians will be the first in the country to experience this tale about ordinary people in an extraordinary place. A locally made musical is a very rare and special thing, and Antarctica gives Hobart the chance to have a world premiere all of its own.
IMOGEN MOORE returns to her home town, Hobart to play Antarctica’s major character, Birdie. With a host of recent national stage credits to her name including Opera Australia’s Anything Goes, this will be Imogen’s first leading role in a large scale musical.
BOBBY FOX joins Antarctica to play Doug, an ER Doctor who has run away to Antarctica for some peace and quiet. Not likely! Bobby was handpicked by the man himself to play Franki Valli in Jersey Boys, played the lead in Hot Shoe Shuffle and most recently shared the headline for his own cabaret show at Adelaide Cabaret Festival with Dita Von Teese.
Audiences will be taken on the extraordinary journey of Birdie’s first trip south, as a member of a team of expeditioners travelling to the mythical Hurley Station for a year. Exquisite songs and puppetry will truly bring this tale to life. As one of the major Antarctic gateways, it makes sense that this show opens in Hobart.
Charles Parkinson, Artistic Director of Tasmanian Theatre Company said that as a measure of the strength of Tasmanian theatrical talent, six of the ten performers hail from Tasmania.
“We have secured an extraordinary local and national line up. Imogen’s companions on this journey include some of the biggest names on stage and screen in Australia, both established and up-and-coming.
“Bryony Geeves and Melissa King are the talent behind the puppetry for Antarctica. They have a host of stage credits to their names and worked extensively with Terrapin Puppet Theatre and the Tasmanian Theatre Company. Together they’ll bring life size penguins, giant petrels, wandering albatross and other creatures to life for the audience,” Mr Parkinson said.
The cast includes: Brenton Cosier, Bobby Fox, Bryony Geeves, Vincent Hooper, Melissa King, Genevieve Lemon, Jeff Michel, Imogen Moore, Danielle O’Malley and John Xintavelonis.
