… WITH NEW YEAR’S DAY CONCERT AT MONA

Dust off your purple sneakers for New Year’s Day at Mona with Australian alt-rock royalty You Am I, the first lady of rock Adalita (of Magic Dirt fame), Abbe May’s dark pop, and the Cairo bazaar-inspired orchestrations of Joseph Tawadros, taking to the Main Stage at Mona in Hobart, Tasmania, on 1 January 2016.

You Am I has been treading the boards for 25 years, lead by indomitable frontman Tim Rogers (recently named Double J’s Australian Artist of The Year). Having released 10 studio albums, won a ton of awards and played hundreds of live shows, You Am I return with new album Porridge & Hotsauce sitting in the Top 20 of the ARIA charts, a massive national tour underway, and a singer with more swagger than Mick Jagger. You Am I offer the best hangover cure for 2016.

Having fronted ’90s cult rock act Magic Dirt for more than 20 years, Adalita emerged as a formidable solo artist in 2010. After digging deep emotionally on her eponymous first album, Adalita’s second album, All Day Venus was a coming of age for the musician. Traversing the rainbow of rock, this guitar-slinger is just as comfortable with subtle strings and piano as she is with killer riffs.

Abbe May’s unmistakable voice has soared above the pop pack, with dark synth undertones, blues-tinged guitar and power riffs defining her own electronic doom-pop genre. She’s been up for multiple gongs, including ARIA’s Best Female Artist (2013) and shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. She brings her intense, witty, and electric performance to Mona to bring in the New Year.

Joseph Tawadros is keeping the art of the mystical lute—the oud—alive in mainstream culture. Having collaborated with Neil Finn, Lior and Katie Noonan, as well as traditional Middle Eastern performances throughout Europe, Damascus and Istanbul, Joseph kicks off proceedings at Mona on New Year’s Day.

Pull up a pink beanbag, settle in for sunset and get your rock on in 2016 at the Museum of Old and New Art, Hobart, Tasmania.
