BOFA ANNOUNCES SHORT FILM COMPETITION WINNERS

In the middle of five days of dazzling short film from all over the world, Tasmania’s Breath of Fresh Air (BOFA) Film Festival in Launceston, can now announce the 2015 BOFA Devil Short Film Competition winners!

Taking out the top gong for The BOFA Devil Short Award was The Wonderful directed by Erin good from Sydney. The film tells the story of an elderly man who in his heyday was the king of the strange and magical in his verification job for Wonder Inc., now lives in nostalgia for a life that no longer exists. He has never recovered from the death of his daughter many years ago and there is no more magic left in his job. When the company sends him to follow up a lead, he reluctantly obeys and finds an equally lost soul in the form of a young girl who can levitate. He realises there’s no place in this life for either of them and his last contribution to the world is to set her free.

” We were delighted that Erin won the Award in 2015 as she won the inaugural short film award when still an entry level film student in 2011, showing that her early promise has been realised. It was a strong competition with entries from around Australia. BOFA will screen one short before every film in the festival line up selecting these from the top rated shorts in the judging. Pleasingly almost one third of the shorts shown were produced and directed by Tasmanian, a good sign of the vibrancy of the Tasmanian screen industry.” said Owen Tilbury, BOFA Festival director.

The winning team behind The Wonderful received $1000, a VIP BOFA Festival Pass and a hand-crafted glass BOFA Devil Award designed and made by renowned Tasmanian master glassblower, James Dodson.

A story of The Iceman won the The BOFA Devil Script Award. Written by Tasmanian script writer, Vince Bailey the story tells of a city couple who buy a remote Tasmanian villa with the intention of turning it into a holiday resort, and with the help of friends arrive to get to work renovating the building. But many deaths and disappearances have plagued the area, and it’s not long before the bodies start to pile up once again.

Picking up the BOFA Devil Entrepreneurial Spirit Award was Steve Thomas of Roar Film, Hobart, and also director of the Red Carpet film at BOFA 2015, Death or Liberty. Steve’s varied and entrepreneurial career has seen Roar Film co-produce this film with Tile Film of Ireland (shot in 5 different countries) and for Roar Film to become a successful company producing and selling works world-wide through cinematic, online and educational channels.

The winners of the BOFA Devil Champion Award were Sue and Tony Walker. The BOFA Devil Champion was introduced in 2014, and recognises a champion who does an outstanding job to make the Festival the best experience for Tasmanian audiences. Sue Walker is one of the founders of BOFA and Tony has been the Communications Manager for all media releases, newsletters and the written programme. Both are volunteers and exemplify the spirit of dedication to making BOFA a respected player on the national film festival circuit.

The BOFA Devil Awards were held at the Tasmania Design Centre and provide an opportunity for Tasmanian and mainland film makers and screen industry identities to mingle, network and enjoy. As a participant last year said: ” I can’t remember seeing such a diverse collection of Tasmanian practitioners mixed with such a range of decision makers. It just doesn’t happen in Tasmania and sadly most Tasmanian filmmakers don’t have the resources to attend mainland festivals and conferences.”
