Artists of the future with a story to tell
Graduating students from the University of Tasmania’s Tasmanian College of the Arts (TCOTA) are adding the finishing touches to their masterpieces, ahead of the annual Grad Show in Hobart from Friday, 6th November.
The exhibition is an opportunity for students from all levels of study to showcase their extraordinary talents in all mediums, across painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, video, design and drawing.
And there’s more for just the eye to delight in – this year’s focus drawing on the ideas and stories behind each artwork.
Mr John Vella, Director of the Art Program at TCOTA, said a strong theoretical basis for the student’s work is important.
“It not only matters that an art piece is visually engaging, but that students grapple with a story or an idea… an art work that speaks to an audience is always a strong focus for the students.
“Many are already familiar with the process of preparing for an exhibition, including selecting and displaying works for a gallery space, and are excited to showcase their work.”
Now in its eleventh year, the Grad Show exhibition is one of the highlights of the visual arts calendar, and an important opportunity for the State’s emerging creative talents to exhibit their works publicly.
The exhibition will be officially opened on Friday evening at 5:30pm by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Rathjen, at the Centre for the Arts and the Plimsoll Gallery, Hunter Street.
Members of the public are welcome to view the undergraduate exhibition on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th, with the postgraduate coursework exhibition continuing until Sunday, 15th November.
