Battery Point Bakery Beckons Boy and Bear. Third album out today (Oct 9)
I recently spoke to musician Dave Hosking from band ‘Boy and Bear’ and he mentions to me how much he enjoys Tasmania, particularly a bakery at Battery Point that has an ‘amazing, awesome, array of sweet delicacies’ Dave can’t remember the name but suggests I google it! From that googling I think it may potentially be ‘Jackman and McCross bakery’. Dave also loves the Tasmanian landscape with it’s ‘ruggedness’ calling it an ‘enticing, special spot’.
‘Boy and Bear’ will be heading our way as part of their national tour and to promote their new album ‘Limit of love’. The album was recorded live and Dave says the experience, although a little daunting, was ‘quite refreshing’ and a learning experience, which continued over 5 weeks and the experience ‘shifted his perspective of music’.
Dave is a songwriter that believes in writing a song and not tinkering with it once it’s done but instead to put it to bed.
As to the name of the group, Dave tells me it has no particular relevance but was chosen from the lists available because the guys were running out of time to find a name however having talked to Dave about the live recording and it’s rawness, you could say the experience was ‘bare’ rather than ‘bear’. Dave says having experienced the freedom of the live album where ‘endless options are available’ he doesn’t think he would go back to making music overly influenced and controlled by technology, as too much technology and editing can dehumanize the creative process.
Dave says he always wanted to be a musician and that at university he either got excellent grades on subjects he was passionate about or not so excellent on those he had no passion for doing the bare minimum to scrape through. Dave does believe his university education equipped him with useful skills such as when he gets ‘writer’s block’ in the studio he has the discipline to push through those difficult moments to get the work achieved.
‘Limit of Love’ is out on October 9 and you can see Boy and Bear in concert …
