New Art Shed Makes Art Accessible To More

Posted on

Tapping into your creative juices will be a lot more affordable when a new art supply outlet opens up in Derwent Park in July.

Over the past few years, Art Shed in Moorabbin, Victoria has been selling affordable canvases, paints and brushes to a hungry crowd of artists… and they are expanding to Tasmania.

Owner Cindy Kent said when Art Shed was looking to expand, Tasmania was the perfect choice. “It is such a hub for creative people. With MONA, dozens of galleries, MOFO and the Ten Days festival, we felt we really wanted to be part of this vibrant community,” she said.

“We looked at Perth and Sydney but decided Hobart was where we could really connect with the art community; we want to feel a buzz.

“I visited Hobart, walked around for a couple of days and was blown away by the government’s investment in the arts and culture, the festivals and the art associations. I knew this was the place we needed to be.”

Cindy said there are other art stores who provide high end supplies in the region but for those who want to experiment, $30 on a tube of paint limits artistic expression. “We will carry the supplies and brands that cater to all levels of artists – professionals through to the mums, dads and kids who want to explore their artistic side.

“One thing I noticed while visiting Hobart was the lack of low cost but good quality art supplies – how can you explore and create if you don’t have the equipment you need?

“Art Shed carries over 120 sizes of canvas ranging from student grade to premium gallery lines.”

Cindy said it is encouraging to see the growth of Tasmania’s art community. “People want to express themselves. Most people are creative – you just need to let go and know there are no mistakes in art,” she said.

“Since Moorabbin opened, I’ve noticed more people wanting to be creative. Art is used in therapy, as a tool to relax, and as a way for anyone to express feelings and emotions.”

Art Shed Derwent Park will not just stock art supplies; Cindy is serious about making art accessible to all.

“We will have local artists working with us. So when people come in, they can ask someone who is using the products and knows their stuff for help,” she said.

“There will also be an art room artists can use to teach their craft, for no cost to them, a Mini Monet program for children, a fantastic VIP loyalty program and free shipping Tasmania wide.

“We are all artists. All people need is the opportunity to tap into their creative heart.”
