Music on Malop in March

Posted on

March sees the establishment of a new music venue in Geelong. Steven Nichols of music venue booker ‘Spinning Half’ and the Geelong Workers Club will combine to bring a ‘fresh’ venue for touring acts with ‘superb food’ (no parmies), live music (sans cover band acts) and no TVs, with the exception of all Cats games being shown on the large screen.

Steven would also like to see the cultural club, welcome artistic communities, launch art exhibitions and include a dedicated art installation. The food will be different and so will the drinks, not the standard stock but instead showcase the best in local beers and liqueurs.

I had the opportunity to speak to Steven the day after the ‘soft’ launch of the club, for family and friends. Steven said he has ‘a massive love’ for Tassie and is very familiar with the Sandy Bay area as well as having spent time in Tasmania working for the Falls Festival at Marion Bay.

A factor that encouraged this ‘centre for the arts’, in what is usually considered a manufacturing centre, is the discovery that Aria lists the Geelong ‘3216’ postcode as having ‘the highest percentage growth of royalty earning songwriters in Australia in almost ten years’.

Of course some things crucial to the Worker’s Club is not scheduling major events on the night of Geelong v Carlton matches or indeed on the night of any Geelong games because as Steven says ‘footy rules’.

The Geelong Workers Club has the following philosophy:

“indulge in some amazing tunes with fellow music lovers, chow down on good grub, drink interesting beers ciders local vino and then safely retire to your beds satisfied, cultured, content and full of good vibes”.

Steven is looking forward to welcoming Tasmanians to the Workers Club, Geelong, which is located at 90-92 Little Malop Street Geelong Vic 3220
