ALP’s abrogation on the insidious metadata legislation

Posted on

I thought I would send an email to Bill Shorten about the complete abrogation of his, and the Labor Party’s, responsibilities on the insidious metadata legislation. This is the email I was going to send:

Dear Bill Shorten,

Are you aware that the German Parliament rejected similar metadata laws because of civil liberties concerns and because they have direct experience of the STASI and the SS protecting their citizens from the ‘bad guys’?

Are you aware that $400 million p.a. (hey, after price gouging and cost blowouts, lets call it half-a-billion per year), will add to the so-called ‘debt crisis’ and could be really useful for the hospital and education systems?

Are you aware that careful reviews of metadata retention in the UK, France, and the USA has found no evidence that metadata retention has contributed to preventing or deterring terrorism ever at all?

Are you aware that mass surveillance of citizens by their government is a principle ingredient of Fascist, authoritarian governments?

Are you aware that metadata databases have been proven to be abused and used to target people and groups that are disliked by those in power?

I guess you do and you approve, because when Labor gets back in Government you’ll need to keep the Australian people safe from themselves and your Government safe from the people.

Cheers.

If anyone wants to send an email, here is the current list (as at 27th Feb. 2015):
