The Kore-ah teachings of the Bible

Posted on

I had the pleasure of chatting to Dr Matthew Jacoby of ‘Sons of Korah’ a little while ago. Matt has links with Tasmania; his sister lives at Clifton Beach in South Arm and he particularly enjoys the Tasmanian countryside.

The band recently performed in Tasmania at Door of Hope Church in Launceston and for the second time at St David’s Cathedral in Hobart. Matt remarks on the latter’s ‘wonderful acoustics’ and ‘its atmosphere’ which come together to provide ‘an excellent venue in fact their favourite in Tasmania and one of their favourites in Australia’.

The band is one, if not the only one in the world that soley sings the Psalms. Matt explains that this is how they were meant to be enacted and not only gives us the beauty of music that touches the emotions but singing them actually helps singer memorise internally the words.

Matt says the Psalms are ‘contemporary’ and ‘relevant to our lives today’ with ‘their timeless spirituality.’ The Psalms give voice to ‘injustice, suffering, indignation and anger’.They explore the whole gamut of emotions allowing us to respond to situations with a variety of emotions.

Ranging from tranquil to jubilant to expressing lament, Matt probably describes it best when he says sometimes it can be ‘a roller coaster ride’ but a cathartic one.
