Stand for Mercy … Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan
LIVE EVENT
THURSDAY 29 JANUARY
#ISTANDFORMERCY
Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan are two young Australians who face execution in Indonesia.
They have profoundly changed their lives and now devote their time to the rehabilitation of other prisoners.
There is still hope that Myuran and Andrew will be granted clemency.
Internationally acclaimed artist, Ben Quilty, and singer / songwriter Megan Washington have conceived a public event to support Myuran Sukumaran, Andrew Chan and the Mercy Campaign.
The Mercy Campaign is hosting a petition at mercycampaign.org, where they are humbly asking for mercy for the two rehabilitated prisoners.
The event is named Music for Mercy and will take place in Sydney this Thursday, 29 January from 7.00pm at a location to be confirmed at a media conference tomorrow.
Ben has simply arranged for a peaceful show of support for the men and their families.
Ben said today, “I am organising a candlelight vigil for my friends on death row in Indonesia, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. I know that there is still hope for them both, that there will be justice and mercy for them both, and we will convey that on Thursday.”
Megan added, “Music for Mercy is a peaceful show of support for two young men who did a terrible thing but just should not be shot, there can be no good that comes of that.”
The candlelight vigil will include guest speakers, musical performances and video messages from prominent Australians all supporting mercycampaign.org’s #istandformercy message.
A media conference will be held at 1.00pm on Wednesday, 28 January, 2015 at Guy Maestri’s Studio, 17-19 Gerald Street, Marrickville. Ben Quilty, Jenny Morris, David Wenham, Megan Washington, Brigid Delaney from the Mercy Campaign and Claire Mallinson, Amnesty International’s National Director, will be available for questions and to give further details of the vigil. All media are asked to email office@ferrisdaviesprm.com.au as soon as possible to confirm their attendance. (Details of this media conference are not for publication please)
The Mercy Campaign has said that, “We are so grateful that Ben, Megan and their friends have made such a strong commitment to Myuran and Andrew. We have been overwhelmed by their support and friendship.”
Musicians confirmed to appear on Thursday 29 January in Sydney include Josh Pyke, Julian Hamilton (The Presets), Megan Washington, Emma Louise, Paulie Stewart (Painters and Dockers), Jenny Morris, Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil), Glenn Richards (Augie March), The Tambourine Girls, Steve Balbi (Noiseworks), Justine Clarke and The Church’s Steve Kilbey. The list continues to grow by the minute.
Video messages of support have been recorded by many prominent Australians including Andrew Denton, Jennifer Byrne, Bryan Brown, Missy Higgins and Claudia Karvan. A sample was released as the video, #ISTANDFORMERCY, which can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlS-rNapcVo.
