Admirable Nelson
WA folk/rock band ‘Timothy Nelson and the Infidels’ take the infidels part of their name from the album by Bob Dylan.
The name ‘Nelson’ is of Celtic origin and means ‘champion’, and indeed ‘Timothy Nelson and the Infidels,’ who have been playing together since they were 17, are a champion, creative band, so much so they may sometimes procrastinate for extended time periods over the writing of songs
Of the writing process Tim says, often many songs exist in his mind for a while in ‘a bit of a haze’. He might play around with a chorus or melody for years and then it might quickly be put to paper.
Timothy says writing a song is ‘a messy business’ and mentions taking up work again on lyrics for an instrumental written by a friend 15 years ago. Tim often initially writes song lyrics by voice memo and while the band’s music is fictional it discusses contemporary issues.
The new single ‘All the People’ says Tim’ ‘is about letting the night take you where it pleases and not necessarily for the better’. The narrative involves someone having an hallucinogenic experience due to a spiked drink.
Tim is a big fan of Woody Allen movies and originally wanted to be involved in film making, which can be evidenced in the quality of the bands videos. These days filmmaking is more of a hobby with Tim while music takes centre stage. One reason why he chose music is that film making is more of a collaborative effort.
Timothy is inspired by directors and even with his love of filmmaking he likes to have a professional director work on his videos because he likes pitching to peoples strengths.
Tim also agrees with some other artists that prefer working with a typewriter rather than a computer because hitting typewriter keys demands concentration and lacks the distraction that working on a computer might allow.
Timothy say the band enjoy visiting Tasmania, having performed a couple of times at The Republic Bar and like most visitors, nominate it’s scenery as a big attraction for which they would find any excuse to visit!
