Mozart’s Magic and Soprano Stacey
Stacey Alleaume will be in Tasmania next week performing with Opera Australia’s production of ‘The Magic Flute’. Stacey has only been to Tasmania once before when she performed in the Baroque festival.
The origin of the name Alleaume is French, which in turn originated in the German name ‘Adalhelm’ made up of the words ‘adal’ meaning’ noble’ and ‘helm’ meaning ‘helmet’ or ‘protection’. It would seem the ideal name for someone who is playing the noble princess Pamina, in need of being protected by the hero Tamino. Set in Egypt this production is updated to the 1930s taking inspiration from the world of ‘adventurous archaeologist’ movies like’The Mummy’ and the ‘Indiana Jones’ franchise.
Stacey tells me opera is her passion and profession and music has been her life from very early on, starting in a choir as a young girl, Stacy continued to develop her musical talent, culminating in completing a Bachelor of Music at Melbourne Uni.
The production of ‘The Magic Flute’, like many operas, includes ‘spinspeil’ both music and dialogue and this production has performed 27 shows around Australia already and received a great reception in both states visited (NSW and the ACT) so far.
A lovely touch in this production is giving local children from each place they tour the chance to perform in the production. It’s a way of introducing young people to Opera and hopefully recruiting some future opera stars. The children taken from a variety of schools will get to wear costume and see the mechanics behind the stage including the fast costume changes!
The Magic Flute will be performing at the Princess Theatre, Launceston on September 17th and at The Theatre Royal, Hobart on Friday 19th and Saturday the 20th September.
