Damon’s sparkling launch …

Posted on

Lord Mayor Damon Thomas’s C3 church ‘last canvas event’ on Wednesday evening was star speckled. Colourful John X was the MC and well known culture vulture Leo Schofield formally launched the campaign.

More than 150 business identities and political guests paid $50 to join the launch. Many of his ex TCCI buddies were present to offer support.

But this wasn’t a normal launch, Damon is seeking re election for his second tilt at the Lord Mayor’s job but if elected, he declared, the new term of 4 years will his swan song. Time enough to be the business people’s LM.

Last night’s event had all the hallmarks of a Presidential campaign (farewell?) or a benefit for a former talented sportsperson requiring some extra funds for his retiring years. But it certainly was an outstanding success as a fundraiser for this year’s election expenses which could be significant for him.

Auctioneers Glenn Phair and Hank Petrusma auctioned a variety of goods including paintings, health and beauty products. Estimates of money raised openly range between $15,000 to $20,000 but there could have been more promised.

Sadly this would not be totally Damon’s net funds, as it wasn’t a charity event, Alderman Thomas would have to pay GST on the proceeds. Indeed after the situation outlined in a recent council election campaign in NSW, this income would also have to be declared on his income tax return. Free use of the C3 venue (and maybe the donations of professional help) would form part of the benefit received.

Damon Thomas will need these new funds and more as David Brill was commissioned to produce the TV commercials that will run in the ‘sky is the limit’ before spending limits start. Expect the political ads to start on your local channels. We await the people’s verdict.
