Large Increase in Attendances at the Theatre Royal
The Liberal Government is a strong supporter of the arts in Tasmania.
Tasmania’s arts sector is one of our great competitive strengths. It inspires our community and supports tourism and economic development.
I am delighted that one of the centrepieces of the performing arts in Tasmania, the Theatre Royal, continues to go from strength to strength, recording a significant increase in attendances in 2013.
The Theatre Royal’s annual report tabled in Parliament recently shows overall attendances totalled 62,478 in 2013. This represents an 11 per cent increase over attendances in 2012.
The annual report also shows a profit of $50,002 from 2013 operations. Income from ticket sales for Theatre Royal presentations and co-presentations was $556,634 in 2013.
This year in particular the Theatre Royal has hosted performances in conjunction with a range of cultural events, including Hobart Baroque and Dark Mofo and the Festival of Voices, which draw significant numbers of visitors to Tasmania.
The Liberal Government supports the Theatre Royal with $178,000 each year in funding to support its important activities.
The Government congratulates the Theatre Royal on a highly successful 2013 and looks forward to continued success in 2014 and beyond.
