The Nation: PM Abbott must break silence and act for Colin Russell
Following new uncertainty around charges laid against Australian Colin Russell and his possible prison transfer in Russia, Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has reiterated calls for the Abbott government to make immediate political representations at the highest level.
“Consular support is one thing, but political intervention is what is needed now,” Senator Milne said.
“That Mr Russell could be facing dual charges of piracy and hooliganism is serious and absurd.
“Australians expect their Prime Minister to intervene on their behalf when the circumstances surrounding their incarceration are so serious and ludicrous. Common sense is out the window.
“When the Prime Minister won’t even pick up the phone to help secure the release of a peaceful protester held by a foreign power on ridiculous charges, something is seriously wrong.”
