Should we introduce elephants to Australia?
Gamba grass, an introduced plant that grows into dry tussocks up to 4 m tall, is a major source of fuel for wildfires in northern Australia, but is also a great meal for elephants and rhinoceroses in its native Africa. Current methods in place to control the grass are destructive to the environment.
Bowman suggests introducing large herbivore species such as elephants to graze the flammable grasses. He said that there is no “biological control” for the robust grasses that have been introduced by European settlers, and the idea of using machines to clear the grass lands is too costly.
