MONA to host 24-hour Headphone Festival … and …

Posted on

SAT 26 OCT – SUN 27 OCT 2013

The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is hosting ‘Klapperstein’, a 24-hour rendition of Le Placard Headphone Festival, this weekend.

Klapperstein is a 24-hour-long experimental radio concert staged simultaneously around the planet. Streamed live, artists from France, Germany, Switzerland and Tasmania will take control of the airwaves for allotted times.

Prepare your minds and ears for a concert like no other: an event truly of the Digital Age, you’ll listen to this 24-hour long concert through headphones. Come along and let us plug you into the Klapperstein mainframe.

Running continuously over the whole weekend, Klapperstein kicks off at 9pm on Saturday. The Wine Bar will be open until midnight so you can soak up some pinot as you listen in (it’ll re-open at 9am on Sunday).

From 1pm-4pm on Sunday, all ears will turn to the Mona Electroacoustic Ensemble. They’ll perform live for us whilst beaming their rad music and wild sounds around the world. You can also listen in to the entire concert online at http://leplacard.org/2013/KLAPPERSTEIN/

Headphones will be available, but we’d encourage you to bring your own (earwax cross-contamination, gross).

L’history:

Le Placard Headphone Festival is a nomadic event that was created 16 years ago by Erik Minkkinen, activist member of the collective Büro, in his appartment in Belleville, central Paris, France. He set up a private bar with six headphones and invited friends to play weird music for 72 hours and work together without disturbing the neighbours. Nearly one hundred Le Placard Headphone Festivals have been held in more than 20 countries, including one with 100 headphones in London, and this weekend, it premieres in Hobart.

STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MONA
Free concert on the lawn

Spirit fingers ready. Last year we did a gospel concert on our lawns. It was a hoot, so we’ve gathered the musical gems again: Andrew Legg, Maria Lurighi, Michael Spiby, Brian Ritchie and The Southern Gospel Choir, as well as a new addition: international superstar Khristian Dentley (Take 6). Whatever the weather, come and play: take selfies in the sun, laze on the lawn, and sing along like you’re Aretha Franklin or Michael Jackson. It’s a one-day sing-a-long gospel choir free-for-all, at MONA. www.mona.net.au/what’s-on/events

It consists of radios, amplifiers, antennae and crystals grown in response to the gallery space. Mona Scholarship 2012 recipient Pip Stafford is a media artist based in Hobart, Tasmania.
