Support for voluntary assisted dying law reform
Marshall Perron, the former Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, has expressed his strong support for the voluntary assisted dying legislation introduced into the Tasmanian Parliament by the Premier, Lara Giddings, and the Leader of the Greens, Nick McKim.
Mr Perron was the person responsible for the Northern Territory Rights of the Terminally Act 1995 which operated for 9 months until overturned by the Federal Parliament.
He said there is now overwhelming evidence that laws permitting assisted dying overseas have proven it can be done safely and the proposed Tasmanian legislation includes many of the same safeguards and additional ones.
“Tasmanians are not asking MPs to lead on this issue, they are asking them to catch up with that evidence and with the views of the vast majority of the community,” Marshall Perron said.
