Just four weeks left to enter Tasmania’s premier portraiture prize
The annual search for Tasmania’s most talented emerging portraiture artist is just four weeks from
conclusion, with entries for the 2013 RACT Insurance Tasmanian Portraiture Prize (TPP) closing on
Sunday, 30 June.
Now entering its sixth year, the TPP was established to create a platform for emerging Tasmanian
artists to exhibit their talents, while also developing a body of portraiture that reflects life in 21st
century Tasmania. The prize is open to artists across many disciplines, with past recipients coming
from fields such as digital media, painting and photography.
RACT Insurance CEO Trent Sayers said the award celebrated the diversity of Tasmania’s emerging
artists and presented an opportunity for the public to show their appreciation of some of our most
talented individuals.
“The Tasmanian Portraiture Prize really highlights everything that is unique about art in Tasmania,”
Mr Sayers said.
“Last year’s winning entry from Hobart artist Laura Hindmarsh was a video self-portrait depicting the
artist attempting to re-arrange her studio to match an image projected onto a wall.
“We’ve seen such an incredible renaissance in Tasmanian art over the past few years, and I would
urge any emerging artist out there to enter this competition.”
Mr Sayers said the 2013 winner would receive $5000 in prize money and a trip for two to the
Archibald Prize exhibition in Sydney, with this year’s second prize also increasing from $500 to
$2000 to assist with studio rent.
“Entrants are asked to produce a portrait of a Tasmanian who is important to them, along with a
statement explaining why and how this person has inspired their work,” he said.
“The prize money and public exposure on offer could help to launch an emerging artist’s career, and
we’re very excited to see what the 2013 entrants produce.”
TPP sketchbooks can now be found in cafes across Hobart and Launceston, designed to encourage
patrons to ‘let their inner artist out’.
