STREETSCAPE DESIGN SEMINAR – THOUGHTS ON HOW TO REINVIGIRATE STREETS AS PLACES TO MEET, EAT AND GREET
This month, on April 19, The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (Tasmanian Chapter) with partners Hobart City Council and Kompan, will host the sixth and final event in the City Talks: Urban Landscapes Seminar Series.
The event, Streetscape Design? Thoughts on how to Reinvigorate Streets as Places to Meet, Eat and Greet, will bring two inspiring landscape architects from Melbourne and Sydney to discuss ways of improving Hobart’s public street culture.
Mary Papaioannou, Principal at HASSELL, will discuss what defines ‘The Street’ and the activity that occurs there by using recent streetscape projects as case studies. Her examples will range from integrated precinct master plans to temporary and experimental urban installations.
Adrian McGregor, Managing Director at McGregor Coxall, will illustrate why the design of streets, squares and parks enhances the quality of Australian cities by using some of his recent projects as examples. He will show how strategic investment in policies and projects that activate street life can deliver long term, transformative economic and health benefits to communities.
The event will run from 11:30am – 1:30pm on April 19 at the Menzies Research Centre in Hobart, Lecture Theatre 105, 17 Liverpool Street, Hobart, Tasmania. The event is free, which includes a light lunch.
Visit www.hobarturban.com.au to get the details for this final event. All built environment professionals and those interested in urban design are encouraged to attend.
Note: the talks and topics arise from concerns raised for the future of the city centre by Danish urban designer, Jan Gehl in the Inner City Development Plan that was prepared for the Hobart City Council.
