Doesn’t it suggest that Southern Waste Solutions does not take public consultation seriously?

Tim Morris’ Toxic Dump Motion

Tim Morris MP, in relation to the proposed C cell development, will move in Parliament today that –

1. The Community Consultation Committee that was agreed to be established by Southern Waste Solutions has not yet been announced, nor has it apparently met;

2. The Sorell Council agreed to meet with Southern Beaches Conservation Society, at a public forum, to discuss the proposed C cell Development, but reneged on this promise, which has resulted in SBCS lodging a complaint with the Tasmanian Ombudsman, and also staging a rally in the Main Street of Sorell in April 2013;

3. There has not yet been a study by the responsible Minister to determine if there are prudent and feasible alternatives to depositing hazardous waste materials in landfill;

4. There is still not a comprehensive Hazardous Waste Management strategy for Tasmania;

5. The Brennan report into legacy waste is still being hidden from public view; and

6. For these, and other reasons, this House is not surprised that substantial community opposition remains to Southern Waste Solutions receiving Regional Development Australia funds to facilitate it proceeding to construct a C-Cell at the adjacent Copping landfill site.

Mr Morris will advise the Minister “After the debacle that was the consultation over the planning approval for the proposed C cell development at the Copping waste disposal site, Southern Waste Solutions eventually agreed to form a Community Consultative Committee as per the Landfill Sustainability Guidelines. Despite the period for applications for nominations for membership to that committee closing at the end of November last year, nothing has been seen or heard of since – that is some 5 months in the waiting.”

Mr Morris will also ask the Minister, “Given the strategic importance of this proposal, and the strength of community concern surrounding the proposed C-cell, does this lack of action on the Community Consultative Community concern you? Doesn’t it suggest that Southern Waste Solutions does not take public consultation seriously?”
