HCC Welcomes State Government Support for Battery Point Walkway
A ten year initiative of the City of Hobart for a Battery Point Walkway has achieved a further milestone with the Tasmanian Government fully supporting the proposal.
“This is a great day for the residents of Hobart knowing that the Sustainable Transport Minister Nick McKim is to take the Council proposal to Canberra to seek infrastructure funding,” said the Chairman of Parks and Customer Services, Alderman Jeff Briscoe, below.
“The Council has been heavily involved in the project since 2002 to construct a walkway around Battery Point from Marieville Esplanade to Salamanca Place. During the past ten years we have conducted environmental studies, heritage studies, acquired land, removed fences and undertaken wide ranging public consultation.”
“We now believe we should get on with the project as all the ‘heavy lifting’ has been achieved. The Council welcomes the involvement of the State Government and their commitment to the project,” said Alderman Briscoe.
“Personally, I feel that it’s great that it has finally got to where it should be, into the implementation phase. The project does not need much further justification.”
“There have been quite a number in the community pushing the Walkway concept certainly since 2002, but prior to that there were proponents of a Walkway across Battery Point going right back to the 1850’s!”
“While it may have taken a century and a half to get this far- it’s now time for it! What we now need to do is formalise the design and get it built,” Alderman Briscoe said.
