Copping flak
Tasmania’s police force has backed a vote of no confidence in the Police Minister David O’Byrne over his handling of budget cuts.
The Police Association polled its membership over the past fortnight.
The union says Mr O’Byrne has not done enough to protect the force from budget cuts.
It has now launched a website to allow the public to express their opinion of Mr O’Byrne.
The association’s president, Randolph Wierenga, says the board will meet next week to consider further action against the Government’s budget cuts, including strikes.
“We have 99 per cent membership of police officers in Tasmania and the overwhelming view is that they have no confidence in the way Mr O’Byrne and the Government has handled the police portfolio, and the budget issues around it,” he said.
He would not nominate who would make a better minister.
