North-West bike path vision a step closer
The Tasmanian Greens Member for Braddon Paul O’Halloran MP today said the launch of a new cycleway connecting Devonport and Quoiba was a positive step, and called on Labor and Liberal go a step further by committing to support a bike path from Devonport to Smithton.
“This is a great step forward, but it’s just a small part of a much more exciting vision for a scenic coastal cycleway along the entire north-west coast,” said Mr O’Halloran.
“A number of short stretches have now been completed along the coastline, and all that’s left to do now is join them up.”
“The north-west has a truly beautiful coastline, and the Greens believe a coastal cycleway would create new opportunities in the bicycle tourism market.”
“A cycleway connecting towns and cities along the north-west coast would be a superb drawcard for tourists arriving on the Spirit of Tasmania, encouraging them to turn west at the highway and explore this truly beautiful part of the world.”
“There is huge community support for the idea, and we also need to think about the benefits of promoting of a healthy and active lifestyle.”
“We are calling on both parties to commit here and now to this exciting vision,” Mr O’Halloran said.
