Change back to two-way streets in Hobart

Change back to two-way streets in Hobart makes environmental and economic sense says Alderman Damon Thomas.

Independent candidate for Lord Mayor Alderman Damon Thomas said the restoration of two-way traffic flow in the Hobart CBD was a high priority and he would continue to push for its implementation within months of the City Council election.

“If I am elected Lord Mayor I will be seeking to have the current officers’ report expedited and if it favours change, as I expect it will, with Council approval I will initiate discussions with the Department of Infrastructure (DIER) to get agreement to put the new arrangements in place as a matter of high priority,” Alderman Thomas said.

“I would certainly want the new arrangements in place well before the full impact of the Myer redevelopment is felt.

“The proposed changes illustrate a way of reverting to the original city design and this measure will reduce air pollution in the CBD and make it easier to access council car parking stations. It will also make access quicker result in less traffic congestion in the city.”

Mr Thomas said traffic congestion would be eased as cars will spend less time going around blocks searching for parking spaces and access to parking stations.

“This is a simple measure that will not be all that expensive to implement and can be readily achieved.

“If we can reduce air pollution and make access to the city easier, then everyone benefits especially our retailers, city workers and visitors.

“I want people to spend more time in the city, to stay longer and enjoy its attractions.

“This measure is simple and can be done without undue cost or delay,” Alderman Thomas said.
