Burnet says welcome refugees

Deputy Lord Mayor and candidate for Lord Mayor, Alderman Helen Burnet believes that Hobart can do more to welcome refugees.

“This city has already benefited immeasurably from welcoming refugees from all over the world”, Ald Burnet said.

Commenting on the two television commercials prepared for the ABC’s Gruen Planet shown on Wednesday 12Th of this month, Ald Burnet said that Hobart should put up its collective hand to welcome people who need refuge and opportunity to pursue their lives.

“Now that Tasmania and Hobart’s population growth is slowing and the demographic is ageing it would not only demonstrate our common humanity, but also benefit our city to welcome more people with different experiences who want to live here”, Ald Burnet said.

Ald Burnet said that she would be contacting Andrew Denton, the producer of Gruen Planet, to see if he would agree to the TV advertisements – specifically aimed at promotion Tasmania as a destination for refugees – being released for general use.

“This is another way we can help revitalize our city”, Ald Burnet said. As Hobartians and Tasmanians we need these people as much as they need somewhere to rebuild their lives.
