Report shows rise in water supply issues … The Miles of Connections …
WATER supply interruptions increased more then 300 per cent last financial year at Ben Lomond Water, its annual report shows.
Released yesterday, the report indicates 1325 customers experienced cuts as unplanned interruptions, lasting an average of 90 minutes.
The company’s ambitious infrastructure plan, which it spent $18 million on during the year, did not see any of the 16 of its 36 water schemes removed from being on a permanent boil water alert.
Meanwhile, the company posted a $7 million profit, up nearly $2 million from 2009-10.
This allowed the councils of Break O’Day, Dorset, Flinders, George Town, Launceston, Meander Valley, Northern Midlands and West Tamar, which collectively own Ben Lomond, to receive nearly $3 million in dividend payments compared with about $2 million in 2009-10.
This financial year its seven senior executives will earn more than $1 million, including six executives on more than $130,000 each.
It will also pay its board a total of $157,155 including $29,000 to chairman Miles Hampton who is paid the same figure by the three other water authorities he chairs.
The report shows the board spent nearly $18,000 on travel, accommodation and meals.
Ben Lomond Water took over from eight Northern councils in 2009 to provide water and sewage services to a population of 140,000 people.

Water pay packet defended
ABC Northern Tasmania
22 December 2010
The new chairman of Tasmania’s water and sewerage corporations says his salary is appropriate for the amount of work involved.
Miles Hampton will be paid $140,000 to work between one and four days a week from next month, when he replaces the outgoing chairman, Geoff Willis.
He has been a director of the corporations since 2008.
Mr Hampton says it will be a busy job.
“It’s four roles, four separate boards, it’s liaising with the government and the council owners and they’ve taken advice on what the appropriate remuneration is and I’ve been happy to accept that advice,” he said.
A spokesman for the corporations’ owner councils, Tony Foster, says the money is justified.
“When someone is working for a board, particularly as a chairman, the amount of time that they devote is really up to making sure that that board works right and they take forward to their meetings well thought out progress for the way we’re going in the future,” he said.
“Miles will bring that, he’s very experienced, not only in governments, but finance and he brings to this position exactly what the owners were looking for.”
