RACT TASMANIAN YOUTH PORTRAIT PRIZE 2011

Posted on

The Tasmanian Youth Portrait Prize featuring the award winning work of Tasmania’s best young and emerging artists, will be on display at the Devonport Regional Gallery (DRG) from 6pm on Friday, 7 October until 23 October.

Now in its fourth year, the youth portrait prize is for those aged 30 and under and features a collection of 2D work depicting living Tasmanians.

Complimenting the exhibition will be the appearance of visiting artist Pierre on Friday, 21st of October who will run portraiture workshops for local school groups.

Pierre is a fictional character played by Hobart performer, Laura Purcell. Pierre is a stereotypical French artist with a Dali twist. He is a self-professed eccentric know it all and portrait expert.

Pierre’s performance works so well with artists young and old because Laura also has a fine art degree so she actually knows what she is talking about. The workshop is meant to be a fun experience rather than a lesson in art.

“All of us here at the gallery are thrilled that the Tasmanian Youth Portraiture Prize will be exhibiting as it really features some stunning works,’’ DRG’s Education and Public Programs Officer Astrid Joyce said.

“And to compliment the exhibition with the appearance of Pierre will be really valuable for not only the schoolchildren who attend but to all of us here at the gallery as well.

“Pierre is guaranteed to make the workshops one never to be forgotten and with her off-beat humour and wisdom, creates a magnificent package of fun and facts for all.’’

The workshops run for 45 minutes and students will be taught how to strengthen their observational skills, interpret an image and encourage imagination in portraiture.
Interested participants in the workshops can book by contacting the gallery on 64248296.
