GOOD NEWS FOR CENTRAL COAST RESIDENTS ON GAS ROLLOUT

Posted on

The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed indications from the Infrastructure Minister David O’Byrne that residents in and around Ulverstone could soon have access to the taxpayer-subsidised gas pipeline supplying Simplot, currently under construction.

Responding to a question from the Greens Member for Braddon Paul O’Halloran MP in Parliament today, Mr O’Byrne said Tasgas has told the Government it would provide general access to the pipeline if there was sufficient interest from local residents and businesses.

Mr O’Halloran said he was pleased with the Minister’s response.

“This is really heartening news for residents and businesses in the Central Coast area,” Mr O’Halloran said.

“A mains gas supply has the potential to make small business more competitive, opening up opportunities for job creation and wealth creation. It will also reduce heating costs for residents who are already struggling with high electricity bills.”

“Taxpayers’ money has been used to help pay for this pipeline to help ensure the security of hundreds of jobs at the Simplot factory. The Greens supported this measure, but have been concerned that this investment would bypass homes and businesses.”

“It’s now up to the Central Coast community to seize hold of this wonderful opportunity, and I look forward to working with them to help ensure it happens. With the new Ulverstone Wharf redevelopment currently in the construction phase, this is a terrific opportunity to value-add to the roll out of gas in the region.”
