The Hobart Comedy Festival – the perfect winter warmer!

Posted on

The Hobart Comedy Festival enters its ninth successful year in 2011 and will again feature comedy artists from Australia and overseas. It has become a favourite boutique event among comedians and audiences, featuring comedy act combinations which audiences cannot see performing together anywhere else in the world.

The Festival program, updates and more information are at www.hobartcomfest.com

Each year The Hobart Comedy Festival selects rising stars from overseas and brings them to Hobart for a taste of “we saw them before they were famous.” Past unknown but rising stars include DeAnne Smith (USA) who earlier this year returned to Australia and was nominated for the Melbourne Comedy Festival’s prestigious Barry Award. Each year the festival also selects the cream of the crop of Australia’s comedy artists, including expat Tasmanians now excelling on the national comedy circuit. The Hobart Comedy Festival is credited with discovering a series on “unknowns” such as Josh Earl, The Bedroom Philosopher and Hannah Gadsby, among others, all of whom have since carved successful careers nationally and internationally.

The event showcases to Tasmania an array of famous and aspiring Australian and international comedians. The Hobart Comedy Festival is unique, being a programmed event in which performers only appear by invitation. It creates combinations of artists unique and unseen anywhere else in the world to provide audiences with as many comedic styles and experiences as possible. It also continues to support local talent – specifically Tasmanian comedians who have proven their metal with burgeoning careers interstate.

“The Hobart Comedy Festival was re-launched successfully in July 2010 after a short break and was an instant hit. It may be small – but it is dynamic, and the people attending, not just locals, but from across Australia and from overseas, really fell in love with it,” said Craig Wellington, the Producer of the Hobart Comedy Festival. “We look forward to 2011 with gusto, and its exciting because we’re in our ninth year and that means there’s a 10th anniversary just around the corner.”
