Canal estates ban rejected

Posted on

A BID to ban canal-estate developments in Tasmania has failed, with a majority in the Upper House agreeing it would be a bad look for the state.

A lively debate in the Legislative Council yesterday did not result in a vote as it was clear that eight members opposed the legislation initiated by the Labor-Green State Government.

Windermere MLC Ivan Dean said he believed the defeat of Walker Corporation’s proposed $300 million canal development at Ralphs Bay was proof that the existing process was sound.

Mr Dean also said accepting the proposal would send the wrong message to potential developers at a time when the state could least afford it.

Spokeswoman for Save Ralphs Bay group Jane MacDonald was disappointed as the group had been working for a ban.
