Move to hold a Public meeting and elector poll over water meters in Hobart

Posted on

Alderman Jeff Briscoe said, on behalf of residents he will be seeking by way of a notice of motion to the next Hobart City Council to hold a public meeting and to run an elector poll over roll out of Water Meters in Hobart.

“Water supply is an essential service and should not be a means of taxing people.

“We need to get the opinion of our residents. A public meeting and/or an elector poll are two possible ways to go.”

Alderman Briscoe said that the last elector poll that he initiated in Hobart was over the lack of proper process on the Pulp Mill which shown that 80% of residents opposed the pulp mill.

Alderman Jeff Briscoe said he had been contacted (by phone, email and facebook) by countless and angry residents throughout southern Tasmania in the last week objecting the roll out of water meters.

“It is a ‘David and Goliath’ battle to bring a moratorium to stop the roll out of water meters in Southern Tasmania.” They have the money to fund huge PR exercises and residents have only their voices. Councils can help residents voice their concerns including opposition to expensive water meters.

Alderman Jeff Briscoe’s notice of motion to the Hobart City council:

That a report be prepared on:

1. Holding a public meeting over the Water issues, in particular, the roll out of the water meters
2. On a possible elector poll over the water meters issue be conducted by the Hobart City Council.
3. That the southern metropolitan councils be invited to participate in the public meeting and the elector poll.
