Backflip on a great opportunity
Earlier this month the Glenorchy City Council had the opportunity to put itself on a projection of future sustainability without burdening the rate payers of Glenorchy with extraordinary rate rises into the future.
Glenorchy Council had initiated contact with the Hobart Council to discuss options, from shared services through to amalgamation, to see how the two councils might best support each other in reducing the costs to ratepayers.
At the council meeting set to approve an agenda including the possible options, which was prepared by the General Manager on the directive of Alderman at a previous meeting, the council appeared to go to water with a giant about-face.
Glenorchy residents should not continue to accept a last place financial performance from their council.
It is an Alderman’s responsibility to show leadership in setting strategy for the council, not put petty political self-interest first.
