Call for Action

Hobart City Council Alderman Philip Cocker today (Sat) called on the State Government to get on with implementing the transfer of the University to the Hobart Waterfront on the rail yards site.

“This project was recommended by Professor Jonathan West as a part of his proposal to create “Australia’s foremost creative precinct”. “There are no reasons to not begin the processes to make this happen Alderman Cocker said.

“Professor West is correct in that it would place creativity and learning at the heart of Hobart City Alderman Cocker said”. “It would bring several thousand students in to waterfront and city areas which would energise the city”.

“It would be a fantastic to have a cultural precinct around arts, learning and sciences wrapping around a working port”, Alderman Cocker said. “This is a project that will rejuvenate tired areas of the waterfront and energise small business in the city”.

“Why the procrastination?

“Why hasn’t a project team been set up to further this brilliant proposal?”

“This project more than any other can define Hobart City for the future”.

“Coupled with Professor West’s plan to amalgamate the State Library and University Library on the City Hall site we can develop public facilities and access second to none, Alderman Cocker said “The Bartlett library would be a superb facility bringing people of all ages and educative intent to the one facility”.

“I call on the Premier Mr Bartlett to commit to this project and to create a team of committed people to make this project happen”.” Premier Bartlett could demonstrate with this project a capability to overcome the inertia often seen with Government and do something meaningful and long term for the City, and Tasmania, Alderman Cocker said.

Alderman Cocker said” It would be hard to imagine a better legacy for a Premier than to create a cultural and education precinct of the type proposed by Professor West”.

“Professor West described it as a unique opportunity and he was correct and I will be campaigning strongly for it” Alderman Cocker said.
