PaperlinX

The State Opposition welcomes the support offered today to North West Tasmania.
The PaperlinX announcement yesterday will have enormous economic implications and presents a very real jobs crisis in our region.
However, as the State Government has demonstrated time and time again, simply throwing money at a problem won’t fix it; we need to ensure the money is spent wisely in creating sustainable jobs into the future.
In this regard, as the bulk of this money will be administered in Canberra, there is an imperative that on the ground knowledge involving the local community, local councils and the unions is fully utilised in the decision making process.
Naturally, as the alternative government, the State Opposition are willing to work with all stakeholders including government in the best interests of the economic and job security of our region.

The closure of the PaperlinX mills is a devastating blow for the North West community.
At a time like this the community needs to pull together to ensure that we get the best possible outcome.
We will support the Government in doing what is necessary to grow jobs in the North West but we would also ask that Mr Bartlett not move to actively exclude us from the process.
