Liberal Democrats – embrace diversity in politics
The formation of a Liberal Democrat party could provide progressive liberals with the tool they need to incorporate ideas for change, and an opportunity for the Democrats to re-engage in politics.
This may facilitate a transition toward a more representative, progressive governance system.
Dominance by majority parties does not allow a representational democracy. With less than 5% of Australians as members of political parties establishing policies on which legislation is based, our political system does not represent the people.
Moving away from Darwin’s survival of the fittest/most dominant paradigm into a more integrated approach that embraces diversity and empowers individuals, could be a great step forward for Australian politics and culture.
Power sharing governance based on ethical decision making is crucial for this to eventuate. Collaboration and respect would provide many benefits to our democratic processes and therefore the people, giving potential for constructive and progressive development.
Tasmania has the potential of power sharing/minority government after the next election with opportunities to influence the culture of politics and society in Australia. The benefits and limitations will undoubtedly have further discussion in the public arena, reviewing examples from this state and internationally.
If the progressives in society seize the opportunity and more parties are formed and elected, who knows, maybe Australia could see more representational power sharing governance at a Federal level. Could this occur within a constructive democratic culture, based on ethical decision making? One day.
