Faces of the Florentine
Ordinary people standing up for an extraordinary forest
SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY INFORMATION DAY IN THE UPPER FLORENTINE FOREST
About 70 Tasmanians, including many Derwent Valley and Central Highlands residents today spent a lovely peaceful day in the sunny Upper Florentine forest.
The day was organised by local enthusiasts to promote awareness of this special forest.
Informative talks were given about the opportunities that the Upper Florentine forest provides for people interested in birds, botany, photography and ecology.
The talks generated great interest and discussion amongst those who attended. People with experience of the forest showed others points of interest and features on a variety of walks.
The Upper Florentine valley is virtually surrounded by Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and is largely untouched by industrial logging. The forest contains large areas of old growth forest, as well as caves containing evidence of Aboriginal occupation stretching back around 30 000 years.
Local residents will be organising more community information days over the summer.
