Churches of Christ in Victoria and Tasmania (CCVT) has applauded the Federal Government’s decision to increase by 12,500 the number of refugees accepted this year.

CCVT Executive Officer Paul Cameron said he was pleased with the Federal Cabinet’s decision earlier today to lift the numbers of refugees our nation accepts in the face of the huge numbers of displaced people in the world.

He said, “It is staggering that there are currently almost 60 million people fleeing their homes in the Middle East and Africa. These individuals are all human beings made in the image of God and we should do all we can as part of the world community to respond to what has become the greatest humanitarian crisis of our time.”

Mr Cameron said, “I am aware that some Australians will be concerned that accepting more refugees will create a landslide of people seeking asylum, but we are a nation with immense resources and need to be part of the global response.”
