TENDERS are now open for the construction of Brooker Highway Junction Upgrades at Elwick, Goodwood and Howard Roads to improve safety and traffic flow.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the upgrades will improve the efficiency of the Brooker Highway, minimise peak-time bottlenecks and improve connections between local communities.
“The Australian Government has committed $25.6 million and the Tasmanian Government $6.4 million towards this project,” Mr Truss said.
“Apart from the Tasman Bridge, the Brooker Highway carries the highest volumes of traffic in Tasmania and this project is vital to fix the productivity traps and poor traffic efficiency at these junctions.
“It will also provide welcome job support for Tasmania.”
Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding said the project was identified as a high priority in the 2012 Strategic Review of the Brooker Highway.
“The proposed works include realigning the junctions at Elwick and Goodwood Roads to form one signal-controlled intersection,” Mr Hidding said.
“They will also include replacing the Howard Road roundabout with traffic lights, and coordinating the traffic lights at both intersections for efficient traffic flows.”
Further information and artist’s impressions of the upgraded junctions are available from www.transport.tas.gov.au/road/projects/brooker-highway.
Tenders will close on 21 October, with the successful contractor expected to be announced late November.
Work on the Brooker Highway is scheduled to start in December 2015, with completion estimated to be by mid-2017.
