“Many parents are relieved that NSW education minister Adrian Piccoli has cancelled the plan by the Burwood Girls High School principal to screen a film promoting gay parenting during two lesson periods this week,” FamilyVoice national research officer Ros Phillips said today.
“The Principal said that the screening was part of the Safe Schools Coalition program. But this program is misnamed.
“It aims to make schools safe, but only for those who have transgender or same-sex feelings. It ignores the vast majority of students who are bullied. These include the ‘fatties’, ‘skinnies’, ‘rangas’, ‘dummies’, ‘nerds’, ‘ethnics’ and many other groups. Some suffer so greatly that they attempt or commit suicide.”
Ros Phillips pointed out that the federal government has allocated $8 million to fund the Safe Schools Coalition Australia, but much needed programs addressing all forms of bullying have missed out.
“I urge Tony Abbott to defund the controversial Safe Schools Coalition and use the money to support proven anti-bullying programs such as Choose Respect, RULER or CASSE Peaceful Schools,” she said.
