Shadow Minister for Corrections Madeleine Ogilvie said she is very concerned about an incident involving a Tasmanian prisoner today.
“It is deeply concerning that we have had another serious incident involving a prisoner. I have sought further information about the incident from the Minister,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“It seems we have now had a fourth serious incident, that tells me we are not doing enough to keep people safe.
“I am concerned to ensure that whilst the Coronial processes are undertaken, prisoners and staff are kept safe. This undoubtedly means additional resources must immediately be deployed and processes improved.
“The families of those who have died have a right to know that immediate improvements have been put into place so as to ensure people are kept safe. It is not enough to wait to see what deficiencies are identified by the Coroner before acting.
“On a personal level, my heart goes out to all those affected by the deaths in custody.”
