The recent comments of Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Employment Minister Eric Abetz have cast serious doubt over Tasmania’s chance of securing lucrative defence contracts.
Opposition Leader Bryan Green said Labor backs a $600 million bid to build 21 Pacific Ocean patrol boats in Hobart.
“Securing a project like this would be an enormous boost for Tasmania’s economy,” Mr Green said.
“But comments made by Eric Abetz suggesting defence contracts are better suited to northern Australia undermine the bid.
“To make matters worse, Prime Minister Tony Abbott was half-hearted about his support for Tasmania’s proven boat building capacity during his visit today.
“If Tasmania is going to win contracts we need everyone pulling in the one direction.
“The Liberal Government has sent out the wrong message recently by allowing a large contingent of foreign workers to refurbish the Spirits.
“We have the expertise and skills to complete projects here in Tasmania. Unfortunately what appears to be missing is the support of the State and Federal Liberal Governments.”
