The latest CommSec State of the States report reminds us of the fragility of Tasmania’s economy.

But Labor Leader Bryan Green said while Tasmania compares poorly in some areas, there are pleasing signs when it comes to employment and construction figures.

“Labor remains very confident about Tasmania’s economic future, as long as we invest in our commercial strengths,” Mr Green said.

“A falling Australian dollar gives Tasmanian exporters a fighting chance at competing with the rest of the world.

“Labor has pledged to talk up the economy from opposition instead of undermining it with negativity.

“But the Liberal Government needs to stop taking credit for anything good and blaming others for everything else.

“And now is not the time to undermine confidence but making huge cuts to the public sector.

“The Liberals inherited an economy that was starting to rebuild after the global financial crisis.

“It’s highly misleading for Will Hodgman and Peter Gutwein to claim the election as some sort of turning point for the state’s economy when things have been improving since mid-2013.

“The private sector deserves credit for the resilience of Tasmania’s economy, not the government of the day.”
